If you're experiencing symptoms of a urinary tract infection and want to test yourself without visiting a medical professional or waiting for a lengthy and costly lab tests or a trip to the doctor's office you're in the right place. There are multiple testing options when diagnosing utis but none are more quick and easy than at home tests

Urinary tract infection test kits can be purchased over the counter at a pharmacy like CVS, Walgreens, Rite-Aid, and online. At home uti testing offers an avenue of quick diagnosis and fast pain relief.

If you have recurrent uti problems and are visiting many doctor's offices it's time to start uti testing from the comfort of your home.

How at home uti test kits work

Every at home uti test kit comes with one or more uti test strips. These uti test strips are rectangular pieces of paper with 2 test pads. These test strip pads on the uti test strips need to be dipped in your urine sample for about 2 seconds.

Typically after dipping the uti test strip in the urine sample the test pads will begin to change color in about 1-2 minutes. The at home tests will contain a color chart that allow you to assess the color of each test pad and determine if you are showing signs of a UTI.

Most products on the market however do not come with a dedicated urine culture collection cup and you must wet the test directly in the urine stream while uti testing. You can pick up collection cups for urine cultures at your local pharmacy as well.

To read the test result you'll want to match each pad on the strip with the color chart provided by the uti testing kit. Top test pad usually indicates your leukocyte test results while the bottom test pad indicates your nitrite test results.

Reading your test result is usually quite simple for most tests however some test become more complicated as they test for more than two chemicals.

What do at home uti test look for?

The presence of white blood cells in one's urine culture is an indication of an infection. A urine sample with white blood cells will almost always be picked up by all at home uti tests. Urine culture may also contain nitrites which are excreted by bacteria and are typical tested in urine tests.

Most urinary tract infection uti cases are caused by bacteria infection and can be tested for without the need for a doctor's office visit. That's not to say at home diagnostic uti testing can replace medical care, but it's a good first step and offers quick accurate results.

Why test for a urinary tract infection?

Urinary tract infections can pose serious complications. If not treated quickly a urinary tract infection can become something much more extreme, and lead to numerous doctor's visits. It's imperative to preform a urinary tract infection test so you can get early treatment.

How effective are urinary tract infection tests?

Urinary tract infection tests produce very accurate results. Doctor's offices often use the exact same uti tests you can purchase over the counter at the store. Accurate test results mean there's a low chance of a false positives.
